Director, Mr Lai Kok Weng, Lawrence

Profile/Areas of Interest :
Keenly interested in global affairs and Singapore's political development through history, Lawrence pursued these fields while studying in the University of Calgary. Upon his return, he worked with the then Ministry of Community Development and later served as a public relations officer with the National Kidney Foundation, helping to bring awareness to the plight of kidney patients in Singapore. Lawrence then went on to further follow his love for global affairs by serving as a Foreign Service officer with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In his stint in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Lawrence has developed and taught numerous modules including Learning from the 20th Century, Writing an Effective Paper, Communication Toolkit, Ethical Dilemmas, Creativity, Events Management and World Issues: A Singapore Perspective.

Evelyn currently teaches World Issues: A Singapore Perspective to third years and Individual and the Community to first years. Her career spans various industries, from education to publishing to film production. She taught English Literature and the General Paper and was a book editor and TV commercial producer prior to joining the polytechnic. She sees herself as having returned to her first calling at Ngee Ann. Evelyn is a fervent supporter of nature, volunteers actively with the Nature Society (Singapore) and hopes to share her enthusiasm for life and for learning with her students. |

Sandra joined Ngee Ann Polytechnic as an Adjunct Lecturer in 2008 after spending over a decade in the banking industry. During her stint with various foreign banks, her assignments included the promotion and coordination of business development strategies to Fortune 500 multinational companies as well as local listed companies. Prior to her stint in banking, Sandra was a Corporate Communications Executive in the shipping industry.
Teaching has always been her passion and being a firm believer in life-long learning, she feels privileged to have the opportunity to share her life experiences and help nurture young minds.
She hopes to mould mature independent thinkers among the students, help them acquire skills to resolve real life issues and reach their fullest potential. |

Profile/Areas of Interest : Kok Sing has been teaching with Ngee Ann Polytechnic since 2009, when he ended his 13-year affair with advertising. It was a passionate relationship that produced numerous off-springs - advertisements and campaigns into which he put his heart and soul. As a copywriter, he found the romance with words both exhilarating and a truly unending learning journey. Stops on the journey include J. Walter Thompson, TBWA and the Ad Planet Group. Some of the brands he worked with include Chivas Regal, Nivea, LG, DBS Bank, Standard Chartered and StarHub. Kok Sing loves languages. Besides being bilingual in English and Chinese, he speaks Japanese and a smattering of Thai. He hopes to pick up a European language someday. Kok Sing believes that compassion is the most important value in life and nothing lifts the spirit like a kind word. |

Profile/Areas of Interest : Claramae teaches communication and cultural intelligence modules at Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies. She also manages the department's adult education in Critical Core Skills; ranging from cross-cultural & communication skills, design thinking and data science. Prior to her 3-year stint as a volunteer in Cambodia, she was also in the Student Services Office, where she was involved in shaping and implementing the roll-out of the Education and Career Guidance (ECG) curriculum across the various academic schools in Ngee Ann Polytechnic She is certified in CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) and ACTA (Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment). She has trained adult learners attending the part-time diploma courses offered by the Polytechnic’s CET Academy, and has also developed and taught various English language consultancy courses for clients from Laos, Brazil, Myanmar, Japan and China. Having been deeply enriched through interacting with her foreign students and managing a thriving social enterprise in Cambodia, Claramae believes that cross-cultural competency will be a key enabler for the future workforce. Claramae is passionate to share her life-transforming experiences with others, preferably over a cup of coffee. |

Chua Kian Lye, Thomas joined Ngee Ann in 1987 after spending more than 9 years in the manufacturing sector. He had undertaken consultancy projects in industrial and operations management and had helped many manufacturing companies attain ISO 9000 certification. Thomas is presently a QMS lead Auditor and is course instructor for the popular ISO 9000 lead Auditor course. He is also associate member of Certified Practising Accountants, senior member of Institute of Industrial Engineers, and ISO 14000 Environmental Management System Auditor, to name a few. |

Kevin has dabbled with pretty much most things related to marketing and the Internet since he started his career in the print publishing industry in the mid 90s.
He worked with companies like Creative Technology and Singapore Post to produce, build and market their Internet strategies. Kevin started a couple of companies offering marketing services and most notably an Internet company in 2001 that offers sports enthusiasts a social platform.

She likes reading about socio-political development in the US, Europe, Southeast Asia and Singapore, and is particularly interested in issues and tension in multicultural societies. |

Profile/Areas of Interest : Before joining Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Laurence managed the Marketing Communications/Corporate Relations and Human Resources Department in a Multi-National Corporation. His managerial responsibilities included marketing communications, human resource and training. He was also responsible for setting up the Human Resource Department in Johor with a staff strength of 1000. Laurence first started teaching at Film and Media Studies (MCM) and was transferred to IS in its initial startup stage. He has also been involved with the Teaching and Learning Centre as an Educational Development Officer. In 2009, he returned to IS as a senior lecturer. He believes that every student can be empowered to realize their potential. His purpose in life is to touch lives, and to learn from and be touched by others around him.

Max has involved himself with management consulting, the startup of a new specialised independent school, and also the mentoring of young entrepreneurs. He is enthusiastic about education and is keen to identify more platforms to share his wealth of experience.

Prior to joining Ngee Ann in 2008, Wai Tuck was working in the Information Technology (IT) industry in the area of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Office Automation Applications, Enterprise Applications and Project Management.
Wai Tuck joined Ngee Ann in 2008 as IT lecturer in teaching modules like IT Applications, Computer Programming, Databases, Web Publishing, Electronic Business Applications and IT in Business. Mathematics is his all-time favourite, hence from April 2013 semester onwards, he shall be teaching Mathematics. His areas of interest are in Mathematics and IT.In 2019, he found his new interests in the area of Data Analytics. Hence, he has picked up knowledge in using Tableau, R and Python programming language to analyse data.
Wai Tuck is very involved with students and has joined them in many activities like the Youth Expedition Project (YEP) in China and Cambodia, adventure camps in Malaysia, campus runs, dragon boat regattas, industrial visits, class gatherings, etc.

Having spent more than a decade pursuing an education in laid-back and sunny Perth, Noor returned to Singapore with much reluctance but since then has developed a renewed sense of belonging to the city-state. Noor is committed to making Singapore a place where everyone can feel truly belonged. She contributes to this process by being involved in advocating social justice issues particularly concerning the rights and welfare of migrant workers in Singapore. She has presented at numerous conferences on labour migration issues in Singapore and has contributed to academic publications and policy reports on the subject. She hopes to impart in her students a strong sense of social justice and a belief in the force of the individual as an agent of change. |

With a career spanning 15 years in the education sector, Ramesh has taught at government schools and in the private sector. He has taught English, Business and Communication Skills to young adults and has facilitated training for hotel staff in leading hotels in Singapore.
His deep interest in the field of teaching pedagogy has led him to facilitate training for teachers in Singapore and in Russia where he trained teachers in Critical Thinking and Problem-Based Learning.
Ramesh has also been actively involved in Action Research and has presented his research paper at various conferences in Singapore and Mexico. He believes in fostering a culture of thinking in his students and challenging them to adopt a broad perspective by linking learning to the real world.

Prior to joining School of IS, Lai Wan headed the Marketing Section in the School of BA, overseeing and developing marketing related curriculum and programmes. Working closely with industry partners, she established herself as a pioneer in developing and implementing a realistic and applied learning marketing programme in BA. Before joining NP, Lai Wan spent a number of years in the advertising industry and that explains her primary passion in teaching Marketing Communications. She also was heavily involved in many marketing research consultancy projects with clients such as StarHub, 7 Eleven, Ayam Brand, CPF and NTUC.
Lai Wan looks forward to instilling interests and passion in marketing and communications related modules to all students across NP.

Samuel has vast interests and experiences in the fields of Innovation and Psychology.During his stint at the Ministry of Defence, Samuel consulted senior management leaders on change management and transformation, particularly on the set-up of an innovative culture within organisations.
Besides this, he facilitated training and workshops on innovation and creative thinking for internal staff, as well as guests from other public agencies (MOT, NLB, LTA, and MOE).
Prior to joining MINDEF, Samuel worked with children with special needs as an educational-behavioural therapist. His experiences with Autistic, ADHD, and Down Syndrome kids have strengthened his belief that every child is a special and unique individual who does wonders and performs miracles. |

Profile/Areas of Interest : Stella, a former magazine editor at MediaCorp, has helmed magazines as diverse as the youth lifestyle title, LIME (Singapore and Malaysia), to health, travel, property to parenting genres at its Custom Publishing division. As a NP alumnus, she first returned to NP as a Marcom Manager with Corporate Communications. She had been an associate lecturer at NP and RP while writing for magazines like 8 Days, Home & Decor, Young Parents & Simply Her. In 2006, after losing a sister to cancer, Stella launched her book "Cancer Warriors" and a CD of the same name with music from renowned local singers. The Cancer Warriors Project was awarded the Young ChangeMakers Grant by MCYS. Widely featured in newspapers, magazines, TV, radio and local and foreign websites, it received a letter of commendation from PM Lee Hsien Loong & proceeds benefitted local cancer charities. Stella has also served as a panellist for *scape, was editorial advisor to
www.youth.sg and supported national youth events like Noise Singapore, Shine Festival and Singapore Street Festival.

Chern Tat's journey Includes 10 years in The Walt Disney Company, starting from being in On-Air Operations to becoming a Writer/ Producer for 8 years. He produced promos/interstitials for Disney Channels in various Asia-Pacific regions such as Taiwan, Australia and SouthEast Asia. After leaving Walt Disney, he freelanced to experience productions of various genres in networks such as NBC/ Universal's Hallmark Channel.
Beyond Production, Chern Tat is a Senior Archery Coach in the National Registry of Coaches (NROC) and a Level 2 Coach with Field Archery Australia, his core coaching areas includes Mental Skills Training, Sports Massages, Fitness programs and Archery Program Development. He freelances and enjoys interacting with people from various age of life though archery.
Now Chern Tat takes on another journey, bringing his aspirations to share his knowledge and experience and hope to inspire students in academic work.

Kam Seng is a certified Behavioural consultant and is a certified course instructor for the Specialist Diploma in Workplace Safety and Health. He has strong interest in Innovation. His student project has won awards from Tan Kah Kee Young Inventor award and Citibank Ideas in Action. He is trained in the TRIZ methodology for product and service innovation. |

Dax has had experience teaching at the secondary and tertiary levels in Singapore. He is fascinated by the written word and the wonderful intricacies of language, and has a deep affection in his heart for the arts, especially theatre. Genny had served as a board member at the Association of Image Consultants International Singapore Chapter. His career began during NS as a radio presenter for Power98 FM in 1993 before progressing to become WKRZ 91.3FM’s (Unionworks) Assistant Vice President and Music Director in 2001.Jason also spent 3 years with record companies Avex Trax and Warner Music as Strategic Marketing Manager, signing new artist repertoire and releasing music products.
Since joining NP, Jason embarked on a posting in 2010 to live, teach and work in Wuhan, China for over 5 years which he describes as a ‘monumental life shaping affair’.
Jason garners inner energy by communicating and interacting with people from all walks of life.He believes in the intrinsic merits of lifelong learning, volunteers as a unionist to campaign for the betterment of workers and aspires to become a polymath. |

Prior to joining NP, Eunice once taught English, and quite unconventionally, Mathematics in a secondary school. She also enjoyed a short stint at Singapore Polytechnic as an Adjunct Lecturer, where she taught modules related to communication and critical thinking. Eunice finds interacting with youths meaningful and is grateful to have the opportunity to guide and journey with them as an educator. She hopes to impart young people with knowledge that goes beyond academics so that they, in turn, will contribute to the community.
Outside of teaching, Eunice derives joy in baking, playing board games (especially ones to do with words) with friends and exploring different corners of Singapore and the world with her little family.

Prior to joining Ngee Ann, Yu Ching enjoyed an exciting stint in the public service, where her job was to share Singapore's governance story with the world. She has organized study visits and hosted government dignitaries from China, Japan, Korea, Russia, Uzbekistan and even Namibia. She returned to her first love and pursued a Master's degree in History, where she wrote a thesis about the rousing student political scene in 1950s Singapore. At the same time, she tutored undergraduate modules in Singapore history and is a facilitator with The Thought Collective. Through these experiences, Yu Ching found her passion in people development work. She is guided by the belief that teaching does not happen when the teacher is ready to teach, but when the student is ready to learn. Therefore, she endeavours to make her lessons as relevant and engaging as possible.Yu Ching also plays the keyboard in a metal band and has a weakness for desserts. |

Apart from having overseen and produced books, newsletters, subscription products, software products and magazines she had event management, marketing and public relations experience. Having had great experiences teaching younger children in the past, Pauline hopes to inspire and motivate the youths of today again and hence decided to enter the teaching profession. Michelle left full time teaching in 2008 to devote more time to her large (by Singapore standards) family and for the next seven years, was an adjunct lecturer at Singapore Polytechnic.
She is proud of her role as an educator and finds fulfilment in moulding young minds and challenging her students to think critically. She looks forward to an exciting career at Ngee Ann.

Since moving to Singapore in 2007, he has also taken to traveling around SE Asia and enjoying the intercultural experiences that the region has to offer. While in school at Wittenberg University, Aaron focused his studies primarily on psychology. He has designed and carried out studies and experiments with a wide range of topics including Mindfulness, Depression, and Cognitive Style. His ongoing interests in the field are focused on psycholinguistics and cross-cultural psychology.
